Ms. Arun Reaksmey, Executive Director of Strey Khmer and her colleagues took part in a two-day training of 30 women in Sangkat Wat Kor, Battambang Municipality, Battambang province from 19-20 February 2011. This training of trainers will aid them in carrying out other trainings to informal and formal groups of women. This training focused on women in leadership, women’s rights and gender issues.
Strey Khmer team was welcomed by the commune/sangkat chief who expressed his support for the women who are hoping to become Cambodia’s future leaders.
We divided into 3 group discussions in each session. Furthermore, we led them in meaningful games that reflect leadership and solidarity. Young women and women commune/provincial councilors actively shared their ideas and experiences during the session.
During the training, three progressive changes were found:
1) It is necessary to train other women to become leaders. Many women are now brave advocates: they express their views, ask questions, and participate in politics.
2) Their goals are to be the next leaders of today.
3) Women work for other women, and strive to find opportunities in social work.
We believe that our work has helped to advance efforts to achieve the 3rd Millennium Development Goals to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment through crucial and solid training.
Investing in women leadership is necessary to ensure that communities in rural Cambodia are moving towards security, safety, and the respect of women’s dignity and basic human rights. As democracy is still very much beginning, the democratic process itself can either be strengthened or weakened depending on the strength of grassroots movements that give a voice to the rural poor of Cambodia, the majority of whom are women. It is of utmost importance that all women own this democratic process.
Overall, the training on Women in Leadership allowed women to come together, and to prepare themselves to fulfill their hopes and future visions. The training focused on the changes and improvements of women’s situations.
