Phnom Penh Municipal Court and presiding Judge Ke Sakhorn have sentenced many of the men involved with the November rape of two beer garden employees. The sentences are listed below:
- Mr. Suon Chanthon, 24, to six years in prison for attempted rape
- Ra Chamnan, 18, Sok Pha, 24, Keath Phanna, 25, Sorn Lina, 22, Chhoy Phanny, 22, and Sorn Neang, 21, to eight years in prison for rape
- In addition, Judge Ke Sakhorn has ordered the absent men to pay 4 million riel, about $1,000 to each of the victims, who were aged 21 and 25.
Police arrested Mr. Chanthon on the night of November rapes in Sen Sok district, while the other six have remained at large. An eighth man, 25-year-old Kong Sam Eoun, was arrested with Mr. Chanthon but released because the authorities said he was wrongfully accused, though one of victim identified him as a rapist.
Kim Lila, their lawyer said the sentences were too light and that the court should have reinvestigated Mr. Sam Oeun and other Mr. Chanthon to pay compensation as well.
Why did the court not charge Kong Sam Oeun?
